What's going to be happening with Cantorae St. Augustine?
On September 10th, we'll be singing for the landing and Mass of Thanksgiving at the Mission Nombre de Dios. We'll greet the "Governor Menendez" with the Te Deum as he steps ashore, as Fr. Lopez did on September 8, 1565. The Mass for the Feast of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary will include propers, chants, and polyphony. (Indeed, the feast is on the 8th, but modern schedules and marketing require a Saturday celebration.) After the Mass, we'll all process to the Diocesan Museum for a lecture by the distinguished historian Dr. Michael Gannon. The festivities begin at 10 a.m.
Sunday, November 13th will find Cantorae at St. Benedict's Church in the historic Lincolnville neighborhood of St. Augustine. 2011 is the 145th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of St. Joseph from France. They came with no English, little money, and great faith in God to teach the children of the formerly enslaved peoples in the Reconstruction South. We'll celebrate their history with songs from France and the American South, as well as the sacred music they sang and taught to their students. Mark your calendar now for 3 p.m. on November 13th - a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Any free-will donations will help the Sisters' with the restoration of Villa Flora and Brown Hall. (And there's free parking in the adjoining lot!)
And don't forget the monthly Vespers at the Shrine of La Leche. Cooler weather will draw us back to this lovely and sacred spot on September 16, October 21, and November 18. We start with the Angelus at 6 p.m. and Evening Prayer lasts about 30 minutes. All are always welcome!
